IB Maths AA SL vs AI SL: Which Should You Pick?
At Standard Level, the choice between Analysis & Approaches (AA SL) and Applications & Interpretation (AI SL) shapes your workload and can affect university options. Here is how to decide.
What's the core difference?
AA SL leans toward algebra, functions, and calculus with a more abstract, pure-maths flavour. AI SL leans toward data, statistics, and real-world modelling, with heavier calculator use throughout.
Which is 'harder'?
Neither is universally harder — it depends on you. Students who enjoy algebraic manipulation and calculus often prefer AA SL; students who think in data and applications often do better in AI SL.
University considerations
Some degrees — engineering, maths, physics, economics at competitive universities — may prefer or require Analysis & Approaches, sometimes at HL. Always check the specific entry requirements for your target courses before deciding.
- STEM and quantitative economics → often favour AA
- Social sciences, business, design → AI is frequently accepted
