IB Business Management Paper 1: Case Study Tips

Paper 1 in IB Business Management is built around a pre-released case study. Because you get it in advance, it is one of the most preparable papers in the IB — if you work it properly.

Annotate the case study early

Read the pre-released statement many times and annotate it: stakeholders, objectives, problems, and which tools could apply. The earlier you start, the more familiar the context feels in the exam.

Map tools to the context

Don't memorise tools in the abstract — decide which ones genuinely fit this case (SWOT, Ansoff, BCG, financial ratios) and practise applying them to the specific business.

Practise under timed conditions

Application and evaluation marks are lost when you run out of time. Do timed past-paper questions on the current case study so your structure is automatic.

  • Plan each answer for 1–2 minutes before writing
  • Always apply theory to the case, never generically
