How to Choose Your IB Subjects (Without Regret)
Subject choice is one of the first big IB decisions, and it shapes your next two years. Pick well and the Diploma feels manageable. Pick badly and you fight an uphill battle. Here is how to choose with a clear head.
Start with the university course, not the subject
Work backwards. Look up the entry requirements for the degrees you might want, then make sure your choices keep those doors open. Some courses require specific subjects at Higher Level.
Be honest about your strengths
Higher Level subjects demand real time and energy. Choose HL where you are genuinely strong or genuinely interested, because motivation carries you through the hard weeks.
- Pick HL subjects you can sustain for two years
- Balance heavy essay subjects with problem based ones
Mind the workload balance
Six subjects plus the core is a lot. Avoid stacking three essay heavy HLs if writing under time pressure is your weak spot. A balanced timetable protects your overall score.
